At Riphah Internationl University, we aspire to take leadership in the national movement to improve quality and safety in healthcare. The Riphah Institute of Healthcare Improvement & Safety plans to train leaders in quality improvement and patient safety and to promote research that defines best practices for healthcare quality improvement and patient safety.

As we move from traditional models towards bold, new ideas for healthcare reform, the call is on to build creative coalitions and to think in innovative ways. The unique challenges and strengths of hospitals create opportunities for collaboration among disciplines to reshape the healthcare landscape. The Riphah Institute of Healthcare Improvement & Safety exists to train leaders in clinical care improvement and to promote research that defines best practices for healthcare in Pakistan.

Institute’s goal is to eliminate preventable harm to patients and to achieve the best patient outcomes at the lowest cost possible and then to share knowledge of how to achieve this goal with other Pakistani and Middle East Hospitals. Created with seed money from Riphah University, the institute will also provide an infrastructure that will oversee, coordinate and supports patient safety and quality efforts in Riphah University-affiliated hospital which may be replicated in other hospitals of Pakistan and the Middle East.
We aspire to build an infrastructure using our expertise to achieve quality goals with consults, support for data and measurement methodologies, and provision of quality tools. Inpatient and outpatient will be actively engaged in quality projects; Institute will support these efforts with personnel and resources.

The Riphah Institute of Healthcare Improvement & Safety will become the leader in uniting healthcare providers and engaging nationally and internationally renowned experts in collaborative efforts to improve healthcare quality and Patient safety. Additionally, we will develop strong collaborative relationships with various quality experts internationally. These quality collaborative efforts will yield measurable results that will reduce morbidity and mortality through quality improvement and patient safety practices.

Introduction

The Healthcare Quality Directorate (HQD) has been established as a strategic unit of IIMCT Riphah International University. HQD provides support in maintaining the Healthcare Quality, patient safety culture, care, and satisfaction of patients of all Riphah Healthcare Providing facilities by regularly monitoring the quality measures and quality management system and communicating the standards and policies to the healthcare providers. In addition, by ensuring regular compliance with Islamic, ethical values and applicable statutory and regulatory requirements. HQD is also responsible to develop and run courses related to Quality and Patient Safety in Undergraduate and Graduate programs.

Our Quality Mission Statement:

We are committed to providing quality and cost-effective healthcare services in IIMCT-Pakistan Railway Hospital, RIH, IIDC, and Max Hospital. We will strive to accomplish this through:

  • Focus on patient safety, care, and satisfaction.
  • Monitor quality indicators throughout the hospital and use them as objectives for continually improving the effectiveness of the quality management system.
  • Communication of this policy to every member of our organization and take steps to ensure that it is understood & practiced by everyone.
  • Regular compliance with Islamic, ethical values and applicable statutory & regulatory requirements.

HQD ensures the maintenance of these standards by:

  • Maintaining ISO 9001 certification in all four IIMCT hospitals and MSDS licensing at IIMCT-PRH ;
  • Performing clinical audits, quality improvement indicators, mortality and morbidity reviews;
  • Conducting regular Continuing Medical Education (CME) programs for healthcare professionals;
  • Measuring, Monitoring, and prevention of infection;
  • Following international external quality controls;
  • Ensuring ethical staff work practices;
  • Assisting regular audits of clinical standards by external organizations;

Achievements

HQD has had tremendous achievements during the year in the field of academics and certifications.

Academics

  • Under the supervision of the Dean Faculty of Health Sciences Diploma in Healthcare Quality and Patient Safety (DHQPS) was successfully launched in collaboration with IIMC and the first batch completed the course and appeared for their final examination.
  • Patient Safety Curriculum successfully implemented in the Medical Sciences, Rehabilitation and Allied Sciences, Dental Sciences, and Pharmaceutical Sciences colleges of Riphah International University and has taken the lead in Pakistan.

Certifications

  • SUSTAINING ISO 9001:2015 CERTIFICATION and ISO 9001 surveillance of IIMCT-PRH, IIDC, RIH, and Max Hospital by Lloyds Register
  • MSDS (Minimum Service Delivery Standards) license approved for PRH –IIMCT by Punjab Healthcare Association
  • Initiating the Canadian Accreditation process at Max Hospital and IIDC

Message from Project Director

The journey of healthcare quality & safety in Pakistan started some years ago, however it picked up momentum with the 1stInternational Conference on Patient Safety (ICPS) in 2016, which paved the way for “Riphah Institute of Healthcare Improvement & Safety” the first of its kind institute in this region. Riphah International University established RIHIS keeping in line with its commitment towards promoting patient-centric healthcare and quality standards in Pakistan.
