Linguistic Research Laboratory

Introduction

Linguistics is relatively a young discipline in Pakistan but has a great scope. Presently, most if not all, graduates of linguistics end-up within teaching English careers. Eventually, the entire curriculum is based on producing graduates for teaching industry. However, the Department of English Linguistics and Literature (DELL) offers courses in translation studies, corpus linguistics, forensic linguistics, and natural language processing that can provide a different career trajectory including but not limited to teaching, content/creative writing to its graduates. Presently, the students of DELL are studying these courses and conducting appliable research. They also explore interdisciplinary potential of linguistic research essentially within computer sciences, media studies and speech therapy.

The core purpose of LRL is:

    1. To facilitate interdisciplinary research, training, and knowledge exchange;
    2. To provide hands-on training on relevant software for Corpus Linguistics, Translation Studies, and Forensic Linguistics;
    3. To conduct research projects in the field of corpus linguistics and build corpora of different languages;
    4. To help students in translation projects and support them to become freelancers and professional translators; and
  • To explore digital forensics-related research problems and get expertise in voice recognition, author Identification, Audio/Video Forgery Detection, and Social Media Forensics.
