Introduction

Speech Language Pathology/Therapy (SLP/T) is an essential segment of the modern health care system. It is a significant part of Rehabilitation sciences. It pertains to the clinical examination, evaluation, assessment, diagnosis and treatment of speech, language, and feeding, swallowing and/or hearing disorders. Pakistan with a population of 170 million individuals has an estimated over 20 million suffering from communication, swallowing and/or hearing disorders. This program will equip graduates to independently evaluate and treat speech, language, and swallowing disorders, contribute to the development of the profession, and conduct research. Hence, Speech Language Pathology/Therapy covers basic parameters of Rehabilitation sciences i.e. preventive, promotive, diagnostic, habilitative, rehabilitative and curative care for the community.

 The aim of Speech-Language Pathology program is to produce graduates in the country who will be competent to identify, assess, evaluate, manage, treat, educate and help to prevent language, speech, voice, fluency, cognitive, and other related communication disorders feeding and swallowing problems. The B.S. SLP curriculum includes the theory and practicum, lab works and the clinical hours.

The BS SLP degree will train students to help people who have never developed, or lost this ability due to illness or injury. Speech language pathologists care for patients of all ages with communication disorders. They assess, treat, and help to prevent speech, language, cognitive communication, voice, swallowing, fluency, and related disorders. They work in hospitals, rehabilitation centers, schools, private practices and more.

Program Objectives

After completion of the BS SLP program graduates will be able to:

  • Integrate concepts from the cognitive, biological, physical, behavioral and clinical sciences to solvecomplex communication and swallowing dysfunctions, impairment and disability 
  • Identify,formulate, research literature, and analyze complex communication and swallowing problems reaching validated conclusions using principles of rehabilitation sciences
  • Investigate complex communication and swallowing problems in a systematic way including literaturesurvey, design and conduct of experiments, analysis and interpretation of experimental data, and synthesis of information to derive valid conclusions.
  • Anability to create, select and apply appropriate therapeutic techniques, resources, and modern speech, language, feeding and swallowing assessment and management tools, including prediction and modeling, to complex therapy related activities, with an understanding of the limitations.
  • Anability to apply reasoning informed by contextual knowledge to assess societal, health, safety, legal and cultural issues and the consequent responsibilities relevant to Speech Language pathology/ therapy professional practice and solution to complex problems.
  • Work effectively, as an individual or in a team, in multifaceted and /or multidisciplinary health care
  • Demonstrate management skills and apply therapy principles to one’s own work, as a member and/orleader in a team, to manage projects in a multi-disciplinary healthcare setting that enhances the
