BS Prosthetics and Orthotics (P&O)

Program Overview

Introduction:

Prosthetics and Orthotics (P&O) is essential areas of Rehabilitation in which someone who has lost a function because of trauma, disease, a medical condition or congenital abnormality will be afforded physical rehabilitation with the aid of an appliance or device. Prosthetics concerns provision of an artificial limb (prosthesis) for someone that has lost their limb or part of their limb; orthotics concerns the provision of a brace (orthosis) to provide support, correction of a deformity or offer pain relief to a part of the body. In both cases practitioners will be required, through methodical patient assessment and an in-depth knowledge of human anatomy, physiology and function, to formulate a treatment plan for the fitting and follow-up of an appropriate device. A P&O graduate will be trained to have in-depth knowledge and skills over a very broad range of disciplines from the human sciences to mechanical and bioengineering, to communication and interdisciplinary team working to practical working with people suffering often complex conditions, to understanding the materials and equipment used to assist them

Scope:

In Pakistan the prosthetics and orthotics needs are great; according to WHO estimates, 0.5% of the population require P&O services. For Pakistan, that equates to over 1 million people in need of P&O services. Currently it is estimated that only a small

Percentage of this need is being addressed and often by unqualified practitioners in poorly equipped workshops.

Therefore an academic program is urgently needed which can train and enable professionals who can design artificial limbs

(Prostheses) for people with amputations and supportive devices (orthoses) for people with musculoskeletal weakness or neurological disorders.
