Program Brief

PhD English Linguistics program offers the researchers the opportunity to develop an in-depth insight into the theoretical and scientific study of the language and pursue their research under the supervision of highly qualified and experienced academics. It covers a wide range of research fields in Applied Linguistics, Translation Studies, Forensic Linguistics, Neurolinguistics, and Second Language Acquisition.

Program Mission Statement

Our mission is to produce English language and linguistic professionals with a focus on inculcating Islamic ethical values who can successfully work in various fields.

Program Objectives

  • To equip the scholars with the latest knowledge and skills required in the field.
  • To prepare the scholars to reflect on the future possibilities of translation and dig out latest techniques of linguistic analyses based on forensic evidence.
  • To extend or modify the existing theories of second language acquisition through real time/ experimental research
  • To prepare the scholars to solve real-life problems of speech through coordination with speech therapists after developing requisite research expertise in the domain of neurolinguistics.
  • To enable the scholars to make a significant contribution to English linguistics in the form of a doctoral dissertation and publications from it.

Rationale of the Program

Language is not merely a medium of communication or instruction, it is life line of the humanity.  It is an inevitable source of knowledge, scientific exploration, critical thinking and creative expression. Hence, the need for a doctorate program in language studies is more than imperative, and the scope of PhD English Linguistics is wide and glorious. This program aims to provide the ways we look at the world to solve language related problems.

Program Structure

PhD students are required to study seven courses in minimum one-year. They will study the core courses on Advanced Research Methods in Linguistics and Research Writing and Practice to prepare themself to conduct research and write a thesis. There is one compulsory university course; Professional Ethics, in the second semester. This course is designed to inculcate Islamic ethical values with modern academic trends and to promote quality education with academic and moral ethics. The seven courses comprise 20 credit hours; each elective and core course earns 3 credit hours individually, and each university required course earns 2 credit hours. After completing 20 credit hours coursework, the students are required to write a thesis of a minimum of 60,000 words on officially approved research topic. The thesis earns the scholars a total of 30 credit hours to fulfill the partial requirement for the award of PhD degree. The research work is conducted under the supervision of an officially nominated supervisor.

Duration: The students are required to complete coursework of 20 credit hours through regular classes in minimum one-year and maximum two-year.

ADMISSION CRITERIA

•                     MS or MPhil in the relevant domain. A minimum requirement of CGPA is 3/4 in the semester system and 60% marks in the annual system.

•                     GAT Subject (National Testing Service) 70%

UGAT Subject (University Graduate Admission Test) 70%

•                     Shortlisted candidates will be called for an interview for admission to PhD English Linguistics.
