Railway General Hospital Hosts Successful Neonatal Resuscitation Provider Course to Strengthen Newborn Care Capacity

The Department of Paediatrics at Railway General Hospital (Riphah International University's Teaching Hospital (Operated by Riphah Healthcare Services (RHS))), Rawalpindi, successfully conducted the Neonatal Resuscitation Provider Course on Sunday, May 10, 2026, reaffirming its commitment to advancing neonatal healthcare and strengthening clinical competencies among healthcare professionals.
Organized under the auspices of the Pakistan Neonatal Resuscitation Council (PNRC) and the Pakistan Paediatric Association (PPA), the full-day workshop brought together healthcare practitioners from diverse specialties for an intensive learning experience focused on improving neonatal resuscitation practices and reducing neonatal mortality.
The course was led by Brig. Prof. Talal Waqar, alongside a distinguished panel of neonatology experts from the twin cities, including Prof. Dr. Arshad Khushdil, Prof. Dr. Saba Afzal, and Dr. Alia Haleem. Their expertise and practical guidance provided participants with valuable insights into evidence-based neonatal care and emergency management.
A key highlight of the workshop was the keynote session delivered by Prof. Khalid N. Haque, who presented an in-depth discussion on Birth Asphyxia, emphasizing the importance of timely intervention and effective resuscitation techniques in improving newborn survival outcomes. The event was further honored by the presence of Prof. Samiya NaeemUllah, who delivered the concluding remarks and underscored the critical role of continuous professional development and enhanced clinical practice in addressing neonatal health challenges.
The comprehensive training program combined interactive lectures with hands-on skill stations, enabling participants to develop and refine essential neonatal resuscitation competencies. The curriculum also included pre- and post-course assessments, as well as an Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE), ensuring a thorough evaluation of both theoretical knowledge and practical skills.
The workshop witnessed enthusiastic participation from House Officers, Medical Officers, Paediatric Residents, Neonatology Fellows, Senior Registrars, Gynaecology and Obstetrics trainees, as well as Nursing and Paramedical staff, reflecting a multidisciplinary approach to improving neonatal care standards.
According to the post-course evaluations, participants demonstrated significant improvement in both knowledge and clinical skills, with objective assessments indicating a marked increase in post-test performance. The overwhelmingly positive feedback received from attendees highlighted the effectiveness and relevance of the training program.
