The Facilities Management Services Department (FMSD) is responsible for ensuring seamless functionality, safety, and sustainability of university campuses and affiliated hospitals.
As a critical support unit, FMSD oversees a wide range of essential services that contribute to the efficiency, comfort, and security of academic and healthcare environments. Its role is not only to manage the infrastructure and physical assets of the institution but also to proactively implement strategies that enhance operational resilience, environmental sustainability, and long-term institutional growth.
At its core, FMSD is dedicated to infrastructure maintenance, ensuring that all buildings, electrical systems, plumbing, and HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) systems are maintained at optimal performance levels. It also leads space planning and expansion projects, facilitating the institution’s growth through well-planned renovations, expansions, and structural modifications.
A safe and secure environment is a top priority for FMSD. Through rigorous health and safety protocols, risk assessments, and emergency response planning, the department ensures that students, faculty, staff, and visitors are always protected. Additionally, it strengthens security through access control measures, surveillance systems, and trained personnel to mitigate risks and prevent unauthorized access.
Maintaining high standards of cleanliness and hygiene is another essential function, particularly in hospital settings where sanitation is critical. FMSD ensures professional housekeeping services are in place to uphold a healthy and welcoming environment across all campuses and healthcare facilities.
With a strong focus on sustainability, FMSD incorporates eco-friendly practices, energy-efficient technologies, and waste reduction strategies to minimize the environmental footprint of institutional operations. The department is also responsible for disaster preparedness and continuity planning, ensuring that academic and healthcare services remain uninterrupted in case of emergencies.
To support these extensive functions, FMSD employs budgeting and financial management strategies to optimize resources and ensure cost-effective operations. Additionally, it integrates technology-driven solutions and digital monitoring tools, to enhance efficiency, predictive maintenance, and data-driven decision-making.
Recognizing the evolving landscape of facilities management, the department underwent a strategic rebranding from the Operations Department to the Facilities Management Services Department (FMSD), effective 1st November 2024. This transition, implemented under the directive of the Honourable Managing Trustee, was aimed at modernizing the department’s identity and aligning it with globally recognized industry standards. The rebranding signifies a shift towards a more structured, professional, and strategic approach to facilities management, ensuring that FMSD not only meets operational demands but also serves as a key driver of institutional excellence and sustainability.
By embracing best practices and enhancing engagement with external stakeholders, the rebranded FMSD is positioned to deliver superior facilities management services that support the organization’s long-term mission and growth.
